About the role


We are looking for an intellectually curious, highly motivated and passionate Graduate to join our Life & Health (L&H) Valuations Team in Cape Town. You will play an important role in the valuation of life & health business around the African continent as well as other world markets.

You will support us in providing high quality actuarial input to various stakeholders in Swiss Re including the Chief Actuary and head of marketing. Through great teamwork and collaboration, you will gain a deep understanding of the L&H reinsurance market, a variety of insurance and reinsurance products and how they are valued for internal and external reporting. We will also give you the opportunity to participate and contribute to projects that are relevant to the wider Swiss Re Group.  

Specific responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to the following:

  • Support the day-to-day valuation work across different lines of business in the target markets
  • Be involved in the quarterly valuation process across all lines with a specific goal of improving its efficiency and accuracy
  • Support the preparation of actuarial documents to be presented to internal stakeholders and the Board of Directors
  • Complete experience studies whose results will be reflected in the valuation of the business
  • Support the Chief Actuary on ad hoc projects as and when they arise

About You

  • Successfully completed university degree in Actuarial Sciences or equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 Actuarial Exemptions obtained
  • First re/insurance experiences gained through vacation work or internships is an advantage
  • Strong interest in/motivation to learn about insurance/reinsurance
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Approaches problems with curiosity and open-mindedness, is a fast learner
  • Innovative, showing a high degree of own initiative
  • Team-player, willingness to contribute actively to the overall team spirit
  • Ability and enthusiasm to work in a global and multicultural environment
  • Aptitude to express him-/herself effectively in one-on-one conversations and small groups
  • Mature & self-confident; Able to work with clients, business partners or senior colleagues
  • Capacity to readily adapt to a changing and dynamic environment
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
