Programme Overview
Transnet Freight Rail is offering an exciting Trainee Train Assistant opportunity for individuals interested in building a career in the rail and logistics industry.
This trainee programme prepares candidates to assist Train Drivers in ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of freight and cargo, while gaining both theoretical and practical training to become a certified Train Assistant.
Position Purpose
The Trainee Train Assistant will:
- Assist the Train Driver in operating trains safely and efficiently
- Ensure cargo reaches its destination on time and in good condition
- Support operational activities such as locomotive preparation, shunting, and safety procedures
Key Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be responsible for:
- Preparing locomotives and conducting brake tests
- Assisting with train operations and shunting activities
- Handling communication equipment (radios, telemeters, etc.)
- Monitoring train movement and ensuring safety compliance
- Assisting during emergency situations
- Completing administrative duties such as train journals
- Supporting safe working procedures at all times
Minimum Requirements
Educational Requirements:
- Grade 12 (Matric) with Mathematics and/or Physical Science
Additional Requirements:
- Must be 21 years or older
- Minimum height: 1.6m
- Physically and medically fit (hearing, vision, mental fitness)
- Ability to carry heavy objects
- Must pass psychomotor assessments (Vienna Testing System)
- Willing to work shifts and undergo regular medical assessments
Training Requirements
- Must complete both theoretical and practical training
- Must obtain certification to work independently as a Train Assistant
