Canon Collins Trust is inviting students to apply for the Joel Joffe Scholarship Programme for the 2026 academic year.

Scholarship Location: University of Fort Hare (UFH) and University of the Western Cape (UWC), South Africa
About the Canon Collins Joel Joffe Scholarship
The Joel Joffe Scholarship is awarded to final year LLB students at UFH and UWC.
- The Trust will award 4 to 5 scholarships.
- Each scholarship is valued at R40 000, covering part of the student’s final year study costs.
- After graduation, scholars will take part in a 5-month paid internship at Equal Education Law Centre or Legal Resources Centre.
- Recipients will also benefit from opportunities to strengthen their academic and leadership skills through organised events.
Selection Criteria
Scholars will be selected based on the following:
- Academic record – strong performance or notable improvement.
- References – strong recommendations from referees.
- Work experience – preference given to candidates with voluntary or paid legal experience.
- Leadership qualities – demonstrated in academic, workplace, or community life.
- Commitment to community and country – clear intent to contribute positively to South Africa and southern Africa.
- Application quality – complete, timely, and well-written in English.
📌 Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews in November 2025.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be a South African national, residing in South Africa.
- Be studying towards an LLB qualification at UFH or UWC.
- Be currently in their 3rd year of study (full-time, part-time, or distance learning).
- Complete their LLB coursework no later than December 2026.
- Have a strong academic record.
- Be involved in extra-curricular activities.
