Department of Basic Education: Second Chance Matric Programme 2026

Did you fall short of completing your Matric, or do you need to improve your results? The Second Chance Matric Programme offers learners another opportunity to meet the requirements of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or the Senior Certificate (SC) and move forward with their studies, careers, or skills development.

This programme supports the goals of South Africa’s education sector by improving learner retention and helping more people successfully complete Grade 12.


2026 May/June SC & NSC Examination Registration Dates

If you plan to write the May/June 2026 examinations, take note of the official registration timeline:

  • Registration opens: 1 October 2025
  • Registration closes: 6 February 2026

Where to Register

  • Senior Certificate (SC) candidates:
    You can register at your nearest district office or online via e-Services at
    https://www.eservices.gov.za/
  • NSC candidates:
    Registration must be done in person at your nearest district office (online registration is not permitted for NSC).

Late registrations are usually not accepted, so it’s important to register as early as possible.


What Is the Second Chance Matric Programme?

The Second Chance Matric Programme is designed to support learners who were unable to meet the requirements of:

  • The National Senior Certificate (NSC), or
  • The Senior Certificate (SC)

Through targeted academic support and learning resources, the programme helps learners prepare effectively for rewriting selected subjects.

  • Senior Certificate candidates
    Learners registered to write the Senior Certificate examinations in June
  • NSC part-time candidates
    Learners who attempted the NSC after 2008 and are writing in:
    • May/June, and/or
    • November

Targeted Subjects Offered

Learners can receive support in the following key Matric subjects:

  • Accounting
  • Agricultural Sciences
  • Business Studies
  • Economics
  • English First Additional Language (FAL)
  • Geography
  • History
  • Mathematics
  • Mathematical Literacy
  • Physical Sciences
  • Life Sciences

These subjects are prioritised because they are critical for Matric completion, tertiary admission, and career opportunities.
