About the SAA Technical Apprenticeship / Learnership Programme

The SAA Technical Apprenticeship / Learnership Programme is designed to equip learners with industry-relevant aviation skills that meet both regulatory and international aviation standards. Successful candidates will undergo intensive training in one of SAAT’s approved technical trades, combining classroom learning with hands-on workplace experience.

This programme provides a direct pathway into the aircraft maintenance and aviation engineering environment, making it ideal for candidates who are technically inclined and passionate about aviation.


Trades Offered (Choose Two in Order of Preference)

Applicants may select two trades in order of preference from the following:

  • Aircraft Welding
    Welding and repairing aircraft and engine components, plasma spraying, heat treatment, and manufacturing of parts and tooling.
  • Aircraft Spray Painting
    Corrosion prevention, repair of paint coatings, application of protective coatings, and painting aircraft interiors and exteriors.
  • Aircraft Trimming
    Manufacturing, repairing, inspecting, and maintaining aircraft interiors and survival equipment.
  • Aircraft Composite Structures
    Manufacturing, repairing, inspecting, and maintaining aircraft composite components.

Minimum Education Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following educational criteria:

Option 1: Grade 12 (Matric)

  • 50% or Level 4 in Pure Mathematics
  • 50% or Level 4 in Physical Science
  • English (symbol required)

OR

Option 2: N3 Certificate

  • 50% pass in Mathematics
  • 50% pass in Engineering Science

Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes

Knowledge & Skills

  • Ability to read and write in English (essential)
  • Basic understanding of technical or mechanical concepts (advantageous)
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately
  • Good communication skills
