About the Competent B Training Programme
The Competent B qualification is a recognised mining certification in South Africa. It confirms that an individual is competent to perform basic underground mining duties in line with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA).
The programme is designed to address:
- Youth unemployment
- Skills shortages in the mining sector
Training is delivered by an MHSA-accredited provider and includes both theoretical and practical components.
Important: This is a training-only programme. Completion does not guarantee employment.
Purpose of the Programme
The initiative aims to:
- Develop skilled entry-level mining workers
- Improve employability of local youth
- Promote safe and compliant mining practices
- Strengthen community participation in the mining sector
The programme contributes to long-term economic inclusion within the Govan Mbeki region.
Training Content
Participants will receive structured training in:

The training prepares candidates for real underground operational environments.
Stipend Support
Participants will receive:
- A monthly stipend during the 3-month training period

Certification
Upon successful completion, learners will receive:
- A Competent B Certificate
- Certification from an MHSA-accredited training provider
- Industry recognition within the South African gold mining sector

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Reside within Govan Mbeki Local Municipality
- Be between 18 and 35 years old
- Be medically fit for underground mining work
- Have a minimum qualification of Grade 10 or equivalent
- Be unemployed (preference given to unemployed youth)
- Provide proof of residence
