What Is the SMH Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship?

The SMH Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship is designed to develop the next generation of diesel technicians within the Daimler Truck Southern Africa (DTSA) network.

As an apprentice, you will:

  • Work in a real commercial vehicle workshop environment
  • Diagnose, service, and repair heavy vehicles
  • Learn directly from qualified technicians
  • Build experience toward becoming a certified diesel mechanic

The programme is a full-time position based in Centurion and falls under the Production job category.


Key Responsibilities

Maintenance and Repairs

  • Perform repairs according to job cards under supervision
  • Meet DTSA flat rate performance standards
  • Seek support when challenges arise
  • Ensure all work is authorised before starting

Customer Service

  • Handle customer vehicles with care
  • Use seat covers during repairs
  • Inform Foreman or Service Advisor of delays
  • Maintain DTSA quality standards
  • Keep replaced parts for inspection

Administration and Cost Control

  • Complete job cards accurately
  • Record hours worked and materials used
  • Attach picking slips and supporting documents
  • Follow warranty and dealer standards
  • Minimise material wastage

Housekeeping and Safety (SHE Compliance)

  • Use correct tools and equipment
  • Maintain a clean and safe work bay
  • Comply with Safety, Health and Environment regulations
  • Secure and maintain tools

Personal Development

  • Participate in on-the-job and off-the-job training
  • Comply with MERSETA apprenticeship requirements
  • Submit training portfolios on time

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must have one of the following:

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics, Science, and English
  • Technical Matric
  • N2 in Mechanical Engineering
  • N2 in Diesel Motor Mechanics

Additional requirements:

  • Computer literacy
  • Basic technical knowledge of diesel or automotive systems
