Lancet Laboratories is offering an exciting internship opportunity for a Pre-Analytical Intern. This fixed-term contract internship aims to provide valuable workplace experience in laboratory sample handling, specimen tracking, and laboratory support services.
The internship is ideal for individuals interested in gaining experience in pathology laboratory operations while supporting the pre-analytical team with daily laboratory processes.
Internship Overview
The Pre-Analytical Intern will support the laboratory team by assisting with sorting, registering, and distributing pathology samples. The intern will ensure that specimens are processed correctly and prioritized according to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
The intern will also help track sample progress, assist with laboratory documentation, and maintain a clean and organised laboratory environment.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 / Matric or relevant NQF Level 4 qualification
- A BSc Degree will be advantageous
- 0โ1 year relevant working experience
- Computer literacy
- Knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) will be beneficial
- Understanding of organisational policies and procedures
Key Responsibilities
Sample Reception and Laboratory Support
The intern will be responsible for assisting with:
- Sorting and distributing pathology samples according to laboratory procedures
- Supporting sample registration (logging) under supervision
- Receiving samples and verifying specimen information with the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
- Preparing and scanning patient forms onto the Occulus laboratory scanning system
- Dispatching specimens for laboratory processing
- Monitoring courier progress to ensure samples are delivered and processed on time
Customer Service and Stakeholder Interaction
- Provide professional customer service when interacting with medical staff and other stakeholders
- Uphold ethical and professional standards when handling patient information and laboratory processes
Workplace Standards
- Maintain cleanliness and organisation in the laboratory
- Perform housekeeping duties including preparation and cleaning of IT equipment in line with laboratory procedures
