The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is inviting students to apply for its Bursary Programme for the 2027 academic year.
The bursary is aimed at unemployed South African citizens who reside in the Western Cape and want to study full-time towards selected Health Science qualifications.
Successful applicants will receive financial assistance towards selected study costs and will be required to sign a bursary contract with the Department.
Fields of Study Covered
Bursaries will be awarded for studies towards the following Health Science qualifications:
Emergency Care Assistant, Higher Certificate.
Emergency Medical Care, National Diploma.
Medicine, Degree.
Nursing R169, Higher Certificate.
Nursing R171, General Nurse, Diploma.
Nursing R174.
Nursing, B Degree.
Occupational Therapy, Bachelor of Science.
Pharmacy, Degree.
Physiotherapy, Degree.
Speech Therapy, Degree.
The Department may add or remove Health Science qualifications each year, depending on service delivery needs.
What the Bursary Covers
The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness bursary will provide financial assistance towards the following costs:
Registration fees.
Tuition fees.
Examination fees.
Accommodation fees will not be covered.
Bursary Outcome
The outcome of the bursary application process is expected to be concluded between January and February 2027.
Applicants should ensure that all required documents are uploaded correctly to avoid delays or disqualification.
Bursary Obligations
Successful applicants will be required to sign a full-time bursary contract with the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness.
After graduation, bursary recipients will be required to work for the government.
Where applicable, bursary recipients must complete a community service year, which will count towards the first year of the bursary obligation.
After community service, bursary holders must apply for a post within the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness.
They must then work back the remaining years according to the contractual agreement.
Internship does not count as part of the work-back obligation.
Bursary holders who do not complete their work-back obligation may be required to refund the Department for all bursary expenses.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be South African citizens.
Applicants must reside within the Western Cape province.
Applicants must be unemployed.
Applicants must have completed Matric.
Applicants must be studying or intending to study full-time towards one of the listed Health Science qualifications.
Applicants must be studying, accepted to study or awaiting acceptance to study at a relevant accredited Higher Education Institution.
Applicants must be enthusiastic, hardworking and committed to their studies.
Applicants must be willing to complete clinical hours, where required.
Applicants must not have a criminal record.

Certified proof of residence.
Certified proof of parents or guardians income.
Proof of income may include latest payslips, SASSA letter or SARS tax certificate.
Certified proof of disability, if applicable.
Motivational letter to support the application.
