About African Union Internship Program 2026
The African Union (AU) is inviting applications for its Internship Program 2026.
The programme offers students and recent graduates from African Union Member States an opportunity to gain practical work experience while contributing to the work of Africaโs premier continental organisation.
The internship is hosted at the African Union Commission Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and is designed to expose young professionals to international policymaking, multicultural teamwork and continental development work.
Purpose of the Internship Programme
The African Union Internship Program is designed to help participants complement their academic studies with hands-on professional experience across different departments within the AU Commission.
The programme also supports the development of technical, administrative and leadership skills while introducing interns to the work of the African Union in promoting:

Interns may be placed in different AU departments and directorates depending on their academic background and the needs of the organisation.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be nationals of an African Union Member State
- Be currently enrolled in the final year of a bachelorโs degree programme
OR
- Have completed a bachelorโs or postgraduate degree in a relevant field
- Be full-time students if applying while still studying
- Be no more than 32 years old at the time of selection
- Demonstrate high standards of integrity and moral conduct
- Have no serious criminal convictions
- Be fluent in at least one African Union working language, such as Arabic, English, French or Portuguese
Previous professional work experience is not required.
Required Skills
Applicants should have:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Good knowledge of email and internet applications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively in multicultural teams
Knowledge of additional African Union working languages, including Spanish or Kiswahili, will be an added advantage.
Internship Duration and Conditions
The African Union Internship Program is offered as a full-time placement for three months.
The internship may be renewed once for an additional three months.
Applicants should note the following:
- The internship is unpaid
- Interns are responsible for travel, accommodation and living expenses
- No travel compensation is provided
- Interns must arrange their own medical insurance for the full internship period
- The African Union may provide reasonable assistance with entry and residence visas where necessary
