The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) invites qualifying South African learners to apply for the SANRAL Scholarship Programme for the 2027 academic year.

SANRAL Scholarship Programme 2027

SANRAL offers a limited number of scholarships to support South African school learners who want to continue their education and improve their academic opportunities.

The programme is available to learners from:

Grade 8 to Grade 12

and is open irrespective of subject choice.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must:

Academic Requirement

Selection is based on more than academic performance alone.

SANRAL also considers:

  • Financial need.
  • The learner’s background.
  • Available scholarship capacity.

Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee funding.

Household Income Requirement

Applicants must come from households with a total income of:

Less than R550,000 per year

Parents, guardians or spouses must provide the applicable proof of income depending on their employment circumstances.

Required Motivation Letters

Applicants must submit motivation letters from:

  • Parent or parents.
  • Applicant.
  • School.

The learner’s motivation should be approximately:

2 pages

and should explain:

  • Who the learner is.
  • Why they are applying.
  • Why they would like to receive a SANRAL scholarship.

Required Proof of Address

Applicants must provide proof of residential address.

Examples include:

  • Water bill.
  • Electricity bill.
  • Letter from the local council.

The proof should be in the name of the parent or legal guardian.

If a bank statement is used as proof of address, an affidavit confirming the residential address must also be included.

The address provided must correspond with the residential address entered on the application form.

Certified Supporting Documents

Applicants must prepare certified copies of:

  • June academic results.
  • Learner’s ID or birth certificate.
  • Parents’ or legal guardian’s ID documents.
  • Death certificates, where applicable.

Copies must be certified within:

Other Supporting Documents

Depending on the family’s circumstances, applicants may also need:

  • Proof of legal guardianship.
  • Divorce agreement.
  • Home Affairs marital-status confirmation.
  • Affidavit concerning the other parent.
  • Proof of registration for siblings at tertiary institutions.
  • Department of Labour letter for unemployed siblings under 18 who are not studying.
  • Parents’ marriage certificate.
  • Applicant’s marriage certificate, where applicable.
  • Legal proof of separation.
  • Social Services documentation.
  • Court decree for foster children.

Applicants should submit only the documents applicable to their household circumstances.

If Parents or Guardians Are Employed

Applicants should submit:

  • Salary slips.
  • Wage slips.

Proof of income should not be older than:

Three months

If Parents or Guardians Are Unemployed

Applicants should submit:

  • Official Department of Labour letter; or
  • Affidavit confirming unemployment.
  • Proof showing how the household is supported.
  • SASSA documentation where applicable.
  • Three months’ bank statements where applicable.

If income is received from pension, grants, maintenance, rental income or investments, proof of that income should also be submitted.

If Parents or Guardians Are Informal Traders

Applicants should provide:

  • Proof of income.
  • Lease agreement where accommodation is rented, if applicable.

If Parents or Guardians Earn Commission

Applicants may need to provide:

  • IRP5.
  • IT3.
  • IT12.

Where a parent, guardian or spouse owns or is a member of a CC, Pty Ltd or sole proprietorship, supporting documents may include:

  • Income Statement.

  • IT12 individual tax returns for the previous two years.
  • IT3 income tax certificates from the bank for the previous two years.
