Cummins is recruiting an apprentice to join its Distribution Business Segment in Gamsberg, Northern Cape.

The position provides practical exposure to workshop operations, engine repair, maintenance, diagnostics, documentation, health and safety, and field service activities.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants may qualify through one of the following education routes.

Option 1: Grade 12 plus an N6 Mechanical Engineering certificate with four subjects passed from areas such as Mathematics, Mechanotechnics, Mechanical Drawing and Design, Power Machines, Fluid Mechanics, Physics, Strength of Materials or Supervisory Management.

Applicants may also have an N2 or N3 Engineering Studies certificate with subjects including Mathematics, Engineering Science, Engineering Drawing and Diesel Trade Theory or Motor Trade Theory.

Option 2: Grade 12 plus an NCV Level 4 qualification from a TVET College with relevant subjects such as Engineering Process, Professional Engineering Practice, Applied Engineering Technology, Automotive Repair and Maintenance, Mathematics, English First Additional Language, Life Skills and Computer Literacy.

Option 3: NCV Level 4 with the relevant engineering and automotive subjects listed above.

Driver’s Licence Requirement

A valid driver’s licence is compulsory.

Applicants must be active drivers with recent and regular driving experience and must be confident travelling independently when required by the position.

Key Responsibilities

The successful apprentice will support workshop operations and assist with general workshop activities.

Duties may include cleaning, inspecting and disassembling equipment, learning standard repair procedures, performing basic repairs and maintenance, completing work documentation and maintaining tools and equipment.

The apprentice will also complete training aligned with business and technical requirements.

Mechanical and Diagnostic Skills

Candidates will be expected to develop the ability to repair and maintain mechanical and electrical products, including engines and power generators.

The role also involves learning how to diagnose faults, use specialised tools and software, inspect components, replace parts, verify repairs and document completed work.

Health and Safety

The apprentice will be expected to comply with Cummins Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures.

Any incidents, problems or unsafe conditions must be reported to the relevant supervisor.

Local Community Preference

Cummins states that preference may be given to suitably qualified candidates from local host communities where required by project agreements, client requirements, licence conditions or other applicable commitments.
