Artscape invites South African unemployed youth to apply for the EPWP Technical Theatre Internship Programme 2026.

The Artscape Technical Training Academy, in partnership with the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) and the Western Cape Government Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), is offering internship opportunities for young people interested in building careers in technical theatre production.

About the EPWP Internship Programme

The Artscape EPWP Internship Programme is a Workplace Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunity that places interns in a professional theatre environment. Participants will work alongside experienced industry professionals and gain practical training in theatre production and technical operations.

The programme aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and real industry experience, preparing interns for careers in the performing arts and entertainment industry.

Available Internship Positions

The following internship opportunities are available:

  • EPWP Intern: Lighting (x1)
  • EPWP Intern: Sound (x1)
  • EPWP Intern: Stage Management (x2)

Interns will report to the relevant departmental heads, including the Head of Lighting, Head of Sound, or the Stage Services Director of Operations depending on their placement.

Internship Duration and Stipend

The internship will run for 12 months, ending on 31 March 2027.

Daily stipend rates:

  • Graduate (3-year qualification): R243 per day
  • Grade 12 qualification: R162 per day

Key Responsibilities

Interns will gain practical experience in technical theatre and will be expected to:

  • Participate in technical theatre training in areas such as lighting, sound, stage management and theatre automation
  • Assist with theatre productions as part of practical learning
  • Attend all scheduled training sessions
  • Work under the guidance of experienced industry mentors
  • Follow workplace health and safety policies, including PPE requirements
  • Submit monthly activity reports to the Human Resources department

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 certificate or 3-year qualification
  • Must be between 18 and 35 years old
  • Computer literacy in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and Internet
  • Strong interest in technical theatre and performing arts

Additional Skills and Competencies

Preferred candidates should demonstrate:

  • Ability to work overtime when required
  • Strong problem-solving and teamwork skills
  • Commitment to attending all training and production assignments
  • Good communication and reporting skills
  • Ability to communicate in at least two or three Western Cape languages such as English, Afrikaans, or IsiXhosa
  • Previous performing arts experience will be an advantage
