Internship Overview
CapeNature is offering Graduate Internship opportunities within its Biodiversity Capabilities division. These internships provide valuable experience in environmental management, conservation science, and GIS technology.
- Positions:
- Graduate Intern: Ecological Technician (Freshwater)
- Graduate Intern: GIS Technologist
- Contract Duration: 18 Months
- Salary: R120 000 per annum
Available Internship Opportunities
1. Graduate Intern: Ecological Technician (Freshwater)
Location: Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, Stellenbosch
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with the National Water Act
- Conduct audits on Water Use Licenses (WULs)
- Assist with WUL applications
- Convert ecological data into structured databases
- Support freshwater monitoring and reporting
- Conduct fieldwork and compile technical reports
Minimum Requirements
- BSc Honours or MSc in:
- Freshwater Ecology
- Aquatic Science
- Conservation Biology
- Environmental Science or related field
- Knowledge of the National Water Act
- Experience with SASS5 biomonitoring
- Understanding of wetland assessment protocols (advantage)
2. Graduate Intern: GIS Technologist
Location: Cape Town Office
Key Responsibilities
- Support GIS data collection and verification
- Assist with real-time mapping during fire management
- Convert raw data into structured GIS databases
- Contribute to conservation and environmental reports
- Assist with mapping and spatial analysis
Minimum Requirements
- Degree (NQF Level 7 or higher) in:
- Geomatics
- Environmental Management
- Conservation Science
- Biological or Ecological Sciences
- Knowledge of GIS systems (ArcGIS & QGIS)
- Understanding of cartography and GPS technology
General Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be a young unemployed graduate (within the last 2 years)
- Have no criminal record
- Have a valid Code EB08 driver’s licence
- Be willing to work in remote field environments
