Council for Geoscience (CGS) Bursaries 2025

The Council for Geoscience (CGS) invites students to apply for Bursary Programme for 2025 academic year.
Bursary Application closing date: 21 March 2025.
The Council for Geoscience (CGS) is offering bursaries for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in various geoscience disciplines for students in South Africa. The bursary will cover a range of study-related expenses and is available for students pursuing qualifications in fields related to geoscience.
Fields of Study:
Bursaries are available for the following fields:
- Computational Geosciences
- Economic Geology
- Engineering Geology
- Environmental Geology
- Environmental Science
- Exploration Geology and other related geoscience disciplines
- Geo-informatics
- Geochemistry
- Geochronology
- Geohazards
- Geology
- Geomagnetism
- Geophysics
- Geotechnical Investigations
- Hydrogeology (focus on groundwater modeling)
- Marine Geology
- Mineral Economics
- Mining Seismology
- Paleontology
- Remote Sensing
- Seismology
The bursaries also cover research topics defined by the Council for Geoscience (CGS).
Bursary Coverage:
The CGS bursary covers the following expenses:
- Registration fees
- Tuition fees
- Prescribed books
- Meals
- Accommodation/transport allowance
- Field excursions and analysis
- A once-off laptop allowance for first-time bursary recipients
Bursary recipients may be required to participate in vocational work at the company during university holidays and may also be required to work for the CGS after graduation as part of a work-back contract.
Eligibility Requirements:
To be eligible for the CGS bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- South African Citizen
- Completed Matric with at least level 6 in Mathematics and Physical Science.
- Full-time study towards a qualification in one of the listed fields for 2025.
- Currently studying or accepted at a recognized South African tertiary institution.
- If already studying, applicants must have passed all registered courses.
- Not employed and willing to work for CGS after graduation if required.

- Submit the completed form via email to bursaries@geoscience.org.za.

Required Documentation:
Applicants must submit the following supporting documents with their application (failure to provide all required documents will disqualify your application):
- Certified copy of your ID document.
- Certified copy of your Matric certificate.
- Certified copy of your most recent academic record/transcripts (if you are currently studying).
- Proof of acceptance at university (on the institution’s letterhead).
- Updated Curriculum Vitae.
- A motivational letter supporting your application.

- 21 March 2025
(Late applications will not be accepted, so make sure to apply before the deadline).
Important Notes:
- Shortlisted candidates will be contacted within one month of the closing date. If you do not receive any feedback, consider your application unsuccessful.
- The bursary also offers a work-back contract after graduation with the CGS.
