About the CSIR Internship Programme 2025

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), South Africa’s premier scientific and technology research organisation, is offering a valuable internship opportunity in the Landward Sciences impact area within its Defence and Security Cluster. This internship is aimed at graduates in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Physics, offering them the chance to gain practical, hands-on experience in cutting-edge research and innovation.

This opportunity is on-site at the CSIR Scientia campus in Pretoria and allows interns to work under the guidance of expert engineers and researchers in cross-functional teams.


Key Responsibilities

Under supervision, the selected intern will:

  • Contribute to literature reviews and project report writing
  • Support experiments in detonics or chemical laboratories
  • Assist with health and safety compliance in the research area
  • Present findings to research teams and participate in symposiums
  • Prepare samples, perform characterisation and data analysis

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

Applicants must have:

  • An Honours degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Physics
  • The ability to work within interdisciplinary teams
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety documentation and procedures
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Awareness of safety standards when working in laboratories
