The Department of Science and Innovation (DSTI) invites unemployed South African graduates to apply for the National Youth Service (NYS) Internship Programme 2026, a 12-month paid internship initiative aimed at skills development, community service, and youth employability.
This programme is implemented through the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), a business unit of the National Research Foundation (NRF).
About the DSTI National Youth Service (NYS) Programme
The DSTI-NYS Programme forms part of government’s broader National Youth Service Programme, designed to address youth unemployment while fostering a culture of community service and volunteerism.
The programme places unemployed graduates under the age of 35 at approved partner institutions for a period of 12 months, during which participants receive a monthly stipend to support their basic needs.
While the programme primarily targets graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, limited opportunities are also available in selected non-STEM disciplines, depending on the recruitment cycle.
Programme Objectives
The DSTI-NYS Programme aims to:
- Provide practical workplace exposure to unemployed graduates
- Enhance employability and work readiness
- Build critical and scarce skills aligned to national development priorities
- Promote active citizenship, volunteerism, and community service

Who Should Apply? (Minimum Requirements)
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be unemployed
- Be 35 years old or younger
- Hold a relevant tertiary qualification, for example:
- Science or Technology
- Journalism and Media Studies
- Communications
- Be computer literate
- Be self-motivated and able to work under pressure
Key Skills and Competencies
Ideal candidates should demonstrate:
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- Writing and/or radio and television skills
- Strong analytical and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and within a team
