About the Learnership

The Dis-Chem Dispensary Support Learnership will help learners understand the basic principles of the pharmaceutical environment and dispensing.

The programme promotes quality on-the-job learning and prepares learners for work in the pharmacy sector.

Candidates will be employed in a fixed-term position as Dispensary Support until they are registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as learner basic assistants.

Permanent employment may only be offered once the learner has qualified as a Basic Pharmacist Assistant.

Responsibilities

Successful learners will assist with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances.

They will also assist with compounding, manipulation or preparation of non-sterile medicines or scheduled substances according to formulas and Standard Operating Procedures approved by the responsible pharmacist.

Learners will assist with unpacking and merchandising stock, as well as cleaning dispensary and over-the-counter shelves approved by the responsible pharmacist.

They may also perform other duties assigned by the Dispensary Manager.

Pharmacy Learning Duties

Learners will be trained to accurately interpret scripts and act professionally and responsibly within the legal requirements of the South African Pharmacy Council.

They will assist with accurate picking, packing, labelling and checking of medication.

Learners must also be aware of common dosages and important drug interactions.

All medications must be checked for accuracy and signed off by a pharmacist.

Stock and Patient Support Duties

Learners will assist in controlling stock, including maintaining cleanliness, packing shelves and checking medicine expiry dates for Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines or scheduled substances.

They will follow up with patients regarding script tracking reports and appointments as requested by the Dispensary Manager.

Learners may also assist with call centre scripts and patient service telephone calls.

Other duties include providing health information to individuals and assisting with scheme authorisation for chronic, HIV and AIDS, and oncology medication.

Learners will also report low stock, out-of-stock levels and stock errors to the Dispensary Manager, and receive dispensary stock according to company procedures.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and either Physical Science or Life Science.

Applicants must have obtained at least an average of 50%.

Skills and Competencies

Applicants must be able to read, write and speak English and a second language.

Candidates must have good time management skills and be deadline-driven.

Applicants must be able to work under pressure and pay attention to detail.

Good communication skills, listening skills, customer service focus and problem-solving ability are important.

Candidates must also be team players, trustworthy, honest and professional.

Computer literacy and numerical skills are also required.
