About the Dispensary Support Learnership

The Dispensary Support Learnership is designed to train learners to successfully complete the Basic Pharmacist Assistant qualification. Learners will be employed on a fixed-term contract as Dispensary Support staff while completing the learnership and working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.

Once learners are registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) and qualify as Basic Pharmacist Assistants, they may be considered for permanent employment at Dis-Chem Pharmacies.

This programme combines structured learning with on-the-job training, ensuring learners gain both theoretical knowledge and practical workplace experience in a real pharmacy environment.


Key Responsibilities

Learners will be trained to perform duties including (but not limited to):

  • Sale of Schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances
  • Assisting with the compounding and preparation of non-sterile medicines according to approved SOPs
  • Unpacking, merchandising, and maintaining cleanliness of dispensary and OTC shelves
  • Accurately interpreting prescriptions under pharmacist supervision
  • Picking, packing, labelling, and checking medication for accuracy
  • Managing stock levels, expiry dates, and dispensary organisation
  • Assisting with patient follow-ups, call centre scripts, and service calls
  • Supporting scheme authorisations for chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medication
  • Promoting health by providing basic, approved information to customers

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for the Dis-Chem Dispensary Support Learnerships 2026, applicants must meet all the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric)
  • Pure Mathematics
  • Physical Science or Life Science
  • A minimum average of 50%
