Emfuleni Local Municipality invites Grade 12 learners residing within the Emfuleni municipal area to apply for the Mayoral Bursary Programme for the 2027 academic year.

About the Emfuleni Mayoral Bursary 2027

The Executive Mayor of Emfuleni Local Municipality is inviting qualifying Grade 12 learners who want to continue their studies at a university or another institution of higher learning to apply for financial assistance for 2027.

The bursary is intended to support academically deserving learners from within Emfuleni, with preference given to applicants from disadvantaged households and families registered on the municipality’s indigent database.

The programme may support full-time undergraduate studies, artisan training and postgraduate studies in approved fields.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Have passed Grade 12 with a minimum average of 60%.
  • Be entering their first year of study at a tertiary institution.
  • Be a resident within Emfuleni Local Municipality.
  • Have proof of admission to an institution of higher learning.
  • Provide a testimonial letter from the high school where they matriculated.
  • Come from a household where the combined income of parents, guardians or the household does not exceed R350,000 per year.

Priority will be given to learners from disadvantaged family backgrounds, particularly households registered on the indigent database.

Preferred Fields of Study

The municipality identifies the following study areas as priorities:

  • Commerce
  • Law
  • Technical skills
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Human and Social Sciences
  • Science and Technology
  • Other scarce and critical skills identified according to Emfuleni Local Municipality’s needs

Preference may also be given to applicants enrolling at local institutions of higher learning.

What Does the Emfuleni Mayoral Bursary Cover?

The bursary may cover:

  • Registration fees
  • Tuition fees
  • Laptop
  • Prescribed books

Accommodation and food costs may also be funded for selected students.

Applicants should note that students who have already received approval for funding from another bursary or funder will not be considered.

Important Terms and Conditions

Successful bursary recipients should take note of the following:

  • Students who already have funding approval from another bursary or funder are not eligible.
  • Students who change their approved programme of study after commencing their studies may forfeit the bursary.
  • The Municipality may seek reimbursement from the relevant institution where bursary conditions are breached.
  • Applicants must provide accurate and complete information.

Important Note for NSFAS Applicants

The municipality’s promotional material specifically encourages learners who may not have NSFAS funding to consider applying for the Mayoral Bursary.

However, applicants should still ensure that they meet all of the Municipality’s requirements before submitting an application.
