Gert-Johan Coetzee: Bursaries 2021

Gert-Johan Coetzee invites applicants to apply for Bursary Programme 2021.

Bursary Application Closing date is 09 October 2020

Gert-Johan Coetzee will be awarding 2 bursaries to students who wish to make a name for themeselves within the fashion industry: the Fashion Design Bursary and the Fashion Communication Bursary.

Both bursary provide cover for 3 years of study at the North West School of Design in Klerksdorp to the value of over R170 000, a sewing machine and overlocker as sponsorship from Bernina SA and an Aspire A13-51 i5 Laptop for use during the 3 year course. The bursary does not provide cover for accommodation, transport and meals.

Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • South African citizen
  • Fluent in English
  • Currently in Matric OR have completed Matric
  • Be able to commence studies in January 2021 at the North West School of Design
  • Willing to stay in Klerksdorp for 3 years while studying at the North West School of Design
  • Must have a good attitude with dedication, passion and drive
  • Must have a natural fashion instinct
  • Willing and able to work hard

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):
Fashion Design Bursary:

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Matric certificate or latest results (certified copy)
  • Video (including your full name, age, where you live and why you should be awarded the Gert-Johan Coetzee Fashion Design bursary: 1 minute long and not bigger than 200 MB)
  • 2 Fashion Designs based on any style tribe including fashion sketches (A4 size, full colour, not bigger than 5 MB each)
  • Mood Board with a collage showing which subcultures and aesthetics inspired your designs (not bigger than 5 MB)

Fashion Communication Bursary:

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Matric certificate or latest results (certified copy)
  • Video (including your full name, age, where you live and why you should be awarded the Gert-Johan Coetzee Fashion Communication bursary: 1 minute long and not bigger than 200 MB)
  • Fashion Essay based on any style tribe (max 200 words)
  • Mood Board with a collage showing which subcultures and aesthetics inspired your designs (not bigger than 5 MB)

Selection Process

The selection process will include the following steps:
1) Semi-finalists will be selected and contacted via telephone by 16 October 2020, by Charles Oosthuizen of North West School of Design.
2) Semi-finalists will be required to complete an assignment and submit it by 30 October 2020 (this will include answering questions by Gert-Johan Coetzee in a video: maximum 2 minutes and to be submitted via WETRANSFER to charles@nwsd.co.za).
3) 10 finalists will be selected to compete for the bursary winners of the competition.
4) Finalists will be required to buy a viewing ticket for the Platinum Fashion Festival 2020 Digital Event, to be hosted by the North West School of Design. The winner of each bursary will then be announced.
