About the Student Phlebotomy Technician Programme

A Phlebotomy Technician is trained to draw blood and collect specimens from patients or donors. Learners in this programme attend structured training, including both theoretical and practical learning.

After successfully completing the 24-month learnership and passing the HPCSA board examination, learners will be able to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as qualified Phlebotomy Technicians. This qualification opens employment opportunities in medical pathology laboratories and blood donation organisations.


Minimum Requirements

  • Educational Qualification: National Senior Certificate (NSC) with the following subjects:
    • English (HL or FAL) – Level 4 (50%–59%)
    • Life Sciences – Level 4 (50%–59%)
    • Mathematics – Level 3 (40%–49%) OR Mathematical Literacy – Level 4 (50%–59%)
  • Experience: 0–1 year relevant working experience
  • Skills: Computer literacy, phlebotomy procedures knowledge

Programme Structure & Duties

  • Attend formal training including lectures, practical training, and assignments
  • Write the HPCSA board examination
  • Meet learnership contractual obligations
  • Collect venous and capillary blood and non-blood specimens
  • Apply safety and housekeeping protocols as per legislation
  • Deliver quality service guided by customer care principles

Note: Learners must arrange their own accommodation, transport, and food. The programme requires a 42.5-hour work week. Shortlisted candidates will undergo a pre-assessment.


Stipend

Learners will receive a stipend during the training period.
