Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Basic Literacy or Grade 10.
  • At least one year of relevant general work experience related to Waste Management within a Local Government Authority.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate bilingually.
  • Ability to follow and execute instructions.
  • Good physical health.
  • Basic knowledge and ability to perform physical work.
  • A hard-working and self-disciplined approach.

The following will be an added advantage:

  • Grade 12.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be responsible for duties such as:

  • Performing litter control.
  • Supporting general landfill operations.
  • Assisting at recycling centres when required.
  • Helping spotters direct and control landfill traffic.
  • Assisting members of the public with waste disposal.
  • Removing metal and sharp objects that may cause tyre damage.
  • Safely storing work equipment after use.
  • Maintaining protective clothing.
  • Removing weeds from pavements.
  • Loading and off-loading materials and equipment.
  • Collecting refuse from households.
  • Sweeping streets and sidewalks.
  • Cleaning taxi and bus ranks.
  • Picking up litter along streets and main roads.
  • Cleaning public open spaces.
  • Removing building rubble from public areas.
  • Emptying street and public dustbins.
  • Cleaning areas around municipal buildings and facilities.

Waste Management Responsibilities

General Workers may also be expected to:

  • Keep landfill areas clean and orderly.
  • Assist with waste disposal operations.
  • Clean rubbish around buildings.
  • Perform duties assigned by supervisors or managers.
  • Execute lawful instructions from supervisors.
  • Perform other related ad hoc Waste Management duties when required.

Salary

The advertised basic salary is:

R166,392 โ€“ R182,280 per annum

Level 13 of a Grade 8 Local Authority
