National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) Inspector in Training: NORM Internship 2025

The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) invites applications from unemployed South African graduates to apply for the Inspector in Training: NORM position on a 24-month contract.

About the NNR

The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) is responsible for ensuring the safe use of nuclear energy and radiation in South Africa. As part of its social responsibility and skills development initiatives, the NNR provides opportunities to unemployed graduates to gain valuable workplace experience through structured training and mentorship programmes.


About the Position

The Inspector in Training: NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) position is designed to develop young professionals in nuclear and radiation safety disciplines. The successful candidate will receive practical training and exposure to compliance assurance activities, inspections, and regulatory reviews within the NNR’s Inspectorate Division.


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Grade 12 / Matric Certificate
  • Completed NQF Level 7 qualification in one of the following fields:
    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • Environmental Management
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Chemical Engineering
    • Nuclear Engineering
  • Minimum of 1 year’s regulatory or industry experience
  • South African citizen

Key Responsibilities

During the 24-month training programme, the successful candidate will:

  • Participate in compliance assurance activities such as planned and unplanned inspections, environmental sampling, and nuclear emergency exercises.
  • Assist in reviewing compliance reports to ensure adequacy and alignment with regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in project review meetings and radiological confirmatory surveys.
  • Support the review and analysis of laboratory results and technical documentation.
  • Develop practical understanding of nuclear regulation principles and procedures.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities
