Southern Sphere Platinum is a prospecting and mine development company with mineral rights for platinum group metals and chrome in the Steelpoort area. The company is currently developing an open-pit mining operation and is committed to local skills development and community upliftment through education support initiatives such as this bursary programme.

About the Southern Sphere Platinum Bursary 2026

Southern Sphere Platinum is inviting students from local communities in the Sekhukhune District to apply for its bursary programme for the 2026 academic year.

The bursary aims to support academically strong students in fields linked to mining, engineering, science, law and technology. The programme is also intended to improve employability after graduation and contribute to local human capital development.

The bursary may be awarded for studies in the following fields:

  • Environmental Science
  • Environmental Management
  • Ecology
  • Conservation Biology
  • Mining Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Process Engineering
  • Geology
  • Legal
  • Information Technology
  • Computer Science
  • Data Science

What the Bursary Covers

The Southern Sphere Platinum bursary provides financial support of up to R200 000 per student.

The bursary may cover:

  • Tuition fees
  • Accommodation at university residence or approved accommodation
  • Prescribed textbooks
  • Meal allowance

The bursary does not cover previous yearsโ€™ outstanding fees.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must come from local communities in the Sekhukhune District
  • Must already be enrolled as a second-year student
  • Must be studying one of the listed fields
  • Must have achieved a minimum average of 60% across all first-year subjects
  • Must be studying at one of the following universities:
    • University of Limpopo
    • North-West University
    • University of the Witwatersrand
    • University of Johannesburg
    • University of Pretoria

Applicants who are already receiving another bursary will not be considered.

Preference may be given to students who demonstrate financial need.

Required Supporting Documents

Applicants must submit certified copies of the following:

  • South African ID document
  • Matric certificate
  • Full academic record for first-year studies
  • Proof of university acceptance or registration
  • Proof that the applicant comes from the Sekhukhune District

Incomplete applications may not be considered.
