About the Apprenticeship

Qualification:
97582 – Occupational Certificate: Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Earthmoving Equipment Mechanic Apprenticeship)

This qualification prepares learners to operate as Heavy Equipment Mechanics, responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing earthmoving and mining equipment. This includes engines, mechanical components, hydraulics, and electrical systems.

A Qualified Heavy Equipment Mechanic Will Be Able To:

  • Perform preventative and scheduled maintenance
  • Dismantle, assess, repair and reassemble engines and powertrain systems
  • Diagnose and repair diesel engine and powertrain faults
  • Work confidently with hydraulically and electrically powered systems

Minimum Requirements

To qualify, applicants must meet ONE OR MORE of the following entry-level requirements:

Academic Requirements

  • Grade 12 with pass in English, Mathematics, and Physical Science
  • N4 Certificate: Mathematics, Engineering Drawing/Industrial Electronics, Engineering Science, Motor/Diesel Trade Theory
  • N4 NCV Certificate for Engineering & Related Design
  • Technical Grade 11 with Maths, Science, and English

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

  • 4+ years working experience as an Artisan Aid

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Apprentices will be required to:

  • Achieve all subjects prior to progressing (N4 Diesel Trade Theory, N4 Mathematics, Engineering Drawing/Industrial Electronics, Engineering Science)
  • Complete all MERSETA-accredited apprenticeship phases
  • Follow organisational requirements for limited-duration apprenticeship contracts
  • Adhere to bursary and internal apprenticeship agreements
