The Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS): Bursaries 2023

The Air Traffic and Navigation Services SOC Limited (ATNS) invites South African students to apply for Bursary Programme 2023 academic year.

The Air Traffic and Navigation Services SOC Limited (ATNS) is inviting students to apply for their bursary programmes, for the 2023 academic year.

ATNS are offering 3 types of bursaries, in which studies will be conducted at the ATNS Aviation Training Academy (ATA) based in Bonaero Park, Johannesburg. The 3 bursaries include:

1) The Aeronautical Information Management Officer (AIMO) Bursary
AIMO’s work closely with information collected from a variety of sources, which is then used by ATCOs (Air Traffic Control Officers) to safely navigate their aircraft. The information is used by pilots during take off, flight and landing of their aircraft. AIMO’s are responsible for processing and distributing aeronautical information needed for safety, regularity and efficiency of air navigation.

2) The Air Traffic Services Officer (ATSO) Bursary
ATSO’s assist Air Traffic Controllers with their daily duties, one of the main tasks being to answer phone calls and using the radio transceiver for air traffic related activities. ATSO’s are important members of the air navigation team, and may have the opportunity to develop skills in the following careers within Air Traffic Management: Aerodrome Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO1) Approach Procedural and Radar Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO2/3) Area Procedural and Radar Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO3).

The ATSO training programme includes 3 phases:
1. Core Content Course: a 21 week theory-based foundation course, hosted at ATA in Gauteng
2. ATS Rating Course: a practical based course to supplements theory training, hosted at ATA in Gauteng
3. ATS Validation: a practical module of on-the-job training, taking place at OR Tambo International or Cape Town International airport.

3) The Airport Management Centre (AMC) Liaison Officer Bursary
The AMC Liaison Officer represents ATNS interest within the Airport Management Centre. The AMC Liaison Officer identifies events related to air traffic control and through the collaborative decision-making process with relevant AMC representatives, discuss and support action plans to resolve identified events.

Bursaries will provide cover for the following expenses:

  • shared accommodation, at a guest lodge arranged by the ATNS ATA
  • transport to and from the ATNS ATA, as per study and practical requirements
  • meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner each day)
  • monthly allowance
  • 10 days of non-academic activities as determined by the study programme co-ordinator

Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
1) Aeronautical Information Management Officer (AIMO) Bursary:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be 18 years or older
  • You must have completed Matric
  • You must have achieved a minimum result of HG “D” or SG “C” for pure Mathematics and English in Matric
  • Students with disabilities are encouraged to apply and will be given preference in line with the Employment Equity Plan
  • Students from designated groups as per the Employment Equity Act of 1998 are encouraged to apply

2) The Air Traffic Services Officer (ATSO) Bursary:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be 18 years or older
  • You must have completed Matric
  • You must have achieved a minimum result of HG “D” or SG “C” for pure Mathematics and English in Matric
  • You must be medically fit
  • Students with disabilities are encouraged to apply and will be given preference in line with the Employment Equity Plan
  • Students from designated groups as per the Employment Equity Act of 1998 are encouraged to apply

3) The Airport Management Centre (AMC) Liaison Officer Bursary:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be 18 years or older
  • You must have completed Matric
  • You must have achieved a minimum result of HG “D” or SG “C” for pure Mathematics and English in Matric
  • You must have good communication skills
  • You must have good spatial reasoning ability
  • You must have good analytical skills
  • You must work well within a team
  • You must have strong multi-tasking skills
  • You must have strong problem solving skills
  • You must have quick decision making skills
  • You must have strong emotional intelligence
  • You must be confident and have high self-esteem
  • Students with disabilities are encouraged to apply and will be given preference in line with the Employment Equity Plan
