Job Purpose: The General Purpose Rating – Port Ops serves as a crew member on various marine vessels operating within the port operations area. This role involves the safe and efficient handling of ropes, wires, winches, capstans, and other deck equipment during shipping operations. Maintenance and cleaning duties on the deck and in the engine room are also part of the job to ensure a safe, reliable, and professional delivery of marine fleet services to clients.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  1. Safe and efficient handling of deck equipment during shipping operations.
  2. Maintenance duties on the vessel, including cleaning and housekeeping.
  3. Assistance to the Chief Marine Engineer as required, including maintenance and repairs.
  4. Maintenance of vessel equipment and cleaning.
  5. Hygienic cleaning of domestic areas on the vessel.
  6. Splicing of ropes and wires.
  7. Routine testing of deck equipment.
  8. Participation in emergency drills and procedures.
  9. Moor/unmoor the vessel.
  10. Observe and report safety non-conformances.
  11. Follow instructions from vessel officers for the safe operation of the vessel.
  12. Proper storage of equipment and waste disposal.
  13. Bridge lookout duties when the craft is underway.
  14. Supervision and training as required.
  15. Checking and maintenance of qualifications.
  16. Observance of safety standards.
  17. Understanding of emergency signals and fire patrol.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Certificate of Proficiency as a General Purpose Rating.
  • 6-12 months of experience in marine operations.
