About the Transnet Trainee Train Assistant Programme
Transnet Freight Rail is offering an exciting opportunity for young South Africans to join its operations as Trainee Train Assistants.
The programme provides both theoretical and practical training to prepare successful candidates to work independently as qualified Train Assistants within the rail transport industry.
Trainees will assist Train Drivers with the safe and efficient handling of trains to ensure freight reaches destinations safely and on time.

Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 with:
- Pure Mathematics and/or
- Physical Science
Additional Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Minimum height requirement: 1.6m
- Must be medically fit
- Good hearing, vision, and mental fitness
- Ability to carry heavy objects
- Must be willing to work shifts
- Must pass psychomotor and behavioural assessments
Training Requirements
Successful candidates must:
- Complete Train Assistant theoretical and practical training
- Obtain Train Assistant certification
- Undergo periodic medical surveillance and behavioural assessments
Key Responsibilities
Trainees will assist with:
- Preparing locomotives before trips
- Conducting brake tests
- Handling communication equipment
- Performing shunting activities
- Assisting Train Drivers during trips and emergencies
- Monitoring train movement and signals
- Completing train journals and administration duties
- Ensuring safety compliance at all times
