About the Programme
UNISA, the only publicly funded institution in South Africa dedicated to distance education, is seeking applications for services as Online Teaching Assistants (TAs) on an independent contract basis.
Teaching Assistants will be expected to dedicate at least 20 hours per week to supporting students in online learning. The role involves active facilitation, grading, mentoring, and providing feedback to approximately 250 assigned students.
Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching Assistants will be responsible for:
- Familiarising themselves with online subject content.
- Reviewing and providing feedback on online study materials and assessments.
- Engaging with students through online forums and discussion platforms.
- Providing timely and personalised feedback on assessments.
- Participating in online grading, moderation, and quality assurance of student work.
- Responding to student queries within 24–48 hours.
- Interacting with lead lecturers and supporting fellow TAs.
- Performing administrative tasks such as marking spreadsheets and plagiarism reports.
Requirements and Competencies
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- A Master’s degree in the relevant subject OR a PhD in Accounting Sciences OR registration with a recognized Professional Body in the Accounting Profession.
- Availability for at least 20 hours per week (spread across most days).
- Ongoing access to the internet at own cost.
- Advanced computer literacy (Microsoft Excel, Teams).
- Excellent English communication skills.
- Commitment to deadlines and passion for student-centred learning.
- Former UNISA student experience and teaching background will be advantageous.

- CAS1501: Perspectives on Accountancy
- Introduces roles and principles applicable to accountancy professionals.
- Explores ethics in personal, business, and professional contexts.
- Covers fraud and corruption fundamentals.
- Provides foundations for ethical and professional practice in accountancy.
Remuneration
- Monthly stipend: R20 835.20
- Contract start date: 01 February 2026
