The University of Cape Town (UCT) invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the Postdoctoral Fellowship in Allergology and Clinical Immunology 2026.

About the Fellowship

This postdoctoral fellowship is offered under a South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC)-funded project led by Professor Jonny Peter, Head of the Division of Allergology and Clinical Immunology at UCT.

The research focuses on improving the diagnosis and management of delayed drug hypersensitivity in TB/HIV endemic settings, using advanced multiomic and AI-based approaches.


Research Focus

  • Genomics and mechanisms of severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCAR)
  • Drug hypersensitivity linked to first-line anti-TB treatment
  • Multiomic data analysis (proteomics, transcriptomics)
  • Development of AI-based imaging tools for early diagnosis

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct advanced research on SCAR pathogenesis
  • Perform multiomic data analysis
  • Develop AI-based diagnostic imaging models
  • Manage research projects and workflows
  • Contribute to publications and grant writing
  • Disseminate research findings

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD in Biomedical Sciences or a related field (within the last 5 years)
  • Strong data analytics skills (omics data such as proteomics and transcriptomics)
  • Experience in AI imaging model development
  • Excellent research and analytical skills

Advantageous Skills

  • Project management experience
  • Human or clinical research experience

Fellowship Conditions

  • Duration: 1 Year (Full-time, in-person)
  • Stipend: R590 321 per annum
  • Open to South African citizens and African applicants with valid study status
  • Candidate will be registered at UCT
  • Applicants must not have held full-time permanent academic or professional posts
