The University of Pretoria invites applications for a Veterinary Nurse Internship at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital (OVAH) within the Faculty of Veterinary Science. This full-time, temporary internship is ideal for qualified veterinary nurses seeking hands-on clinical exposure in one of South Africa’s leading veterinary teaching hospitals.

About the Internship
OVAH is renowned for excellence in veterinary education, research, and clinical service. The Veterinary Nurse Intern will work in a dynamic hospital environment, supporting patient care, clinical operations, and student training while adhering to strict biosecurity and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Patient care, including monitoring, feeding, handling, and assisting with procedures
- Clinic management such as hygiene, stock control, pharmacy orders, equipment care, safety measures, and charge sheets
- Assisting with practical student training and demonstrations
- Communicating with clients, sales representatives, private practitioners, and visiting students
- Supporting students and student nurses with practical tasks (e.g., preparation of drips)
- Ensuring biosecurity and safety compliance and reporting any safety issues
- Continuous self-development
- Flexibility to work across different sections of OVAH
- Performing shift duties, including weekends and after-hours when required
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- A BVetNurse qualification
- Registration as a Veterinary Nurse with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC)
Required Competencies
- Knowledge of small and large animal nursing procedures and biosecurity measures
- Familiarity with ICU equipment, basic diagnostic imaging, and theatre equipment
- Strong attention to detail, professionalism, and responsibility
- Effective communication and organisational skills
- Physical mobility and ability to work under pressure
- Computer literacy
- Willingness to work weekends, after-hours, and shifts
Added Advantage
- Registration with the Veterinary Nursing Association of South Africa (VNASA)
Remuneration
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment, in line with University of Pretoria policy guidelines.
