University of the Free State (UFS) Matriculant of the Year Competition 2026

The University of the Free State (UFS), in collaboration with Media24, invites exceptional South African matriculants to apply for the Matriculant of the Year Competition for the 2026 academic year.


Closing Date: 1 August 2025
Location: University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa


About the Competition:
Now running for over 40 years, this prestigious competition is aimed at identifying and rewarding top-achieving Matric students with bursaries and prizes. Whether you excel in academics, sports, culture, or leadership, this is your opportunity to shine and earn a spot to study at UFS in 2026.


Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must:

  • Be currently in Matric in 2025
  • Intend to study full-time at UFS in 2026
  • Be a top-achieving student in academics, sports, culture, or leadership
  • Attend any Quintile 1–5 school, private school, or be home-schooled
  • Agree to the terms and conditions on the application form

Selection Process:

  1. 25 semi-finalists will be shortlisted based on application forms
  2. 14 finalists will be invited for interviews in October 2025
  3. A winner will be selected based on personal achievements and spirited personality, and announced at a gala dinner

Attach the following supporting documents:

  • A postcard-sized photograph in school uniform
  • Grade 11 final results (certified copy)
  • Matric March and June exam results (certified copies)
