About the Learner Pharmacist’s Assistant Programme 2026

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is inviting young South Africans to apply for the Learner Pharmacist’s Assistant Programme under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) sub-programme.

Successful applicants will be employed as Learner Pharmacist’s Assistants for an initial 12-month contract to obtain the Basic Pharmacist’s Assistant qualification. Based on academic performance, learners may be awarded another 12-month contract to complete the Post-Basic Pharmacist’s Assistant qualification.

The programme is aimed at recruiting young people to support pharmacists at healthcare facilities while delivering comprehensive, efficient, and cost-effective pharmaceutical services in line with statutory requirements.

Learners will also receive formal training from a registered training provider accredited by the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC). After successful completion, learners will be eligible to register with the SAPC as a Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify, applicants must clearly state the following in their CV:

  • Must be between 18 and 35 years old
  • Must have a National Senior Certificate with Matriculation Exemption
  • Must have passed Mathematics, Physical Sciences and/or Life Sciences
  • Or must have an equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification
  • Subject marks must be clearly indicated in the CV

Important: Mathematics Literacy will not be considered.
