Why SASSA Does Not Pay Grants on the First Day of Every Month

Many SASSA beneficiaries expect their social grants to be paid as soon as a new month begins. But if you look at the 2026/2027 SASSA payment schedule, you will notice that payments do not necessarily start on the first day of the month.

This is intentional.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) follows a payment scheduling approach designed to pay grants as early as practical while avoiding certain dates and spreading payments across different grant categories.

For beneficiaries, this means the first payment date could be the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or another early date in the month, depending on how the calendar falls.

Why Doesn’t SASSA Pay Grants on the 1st?

When confirming the 2026/2027 social grant payment schedule, SASSA explained that several operational considerations are taken into account when determining monthly payment dates.

One of these is that payments should not be scheduled on the first day of the month.

SASSA also considers weekends, Mondays and public holidays when setting the payment calendar.

This is why beneficiaries should always check the official payment schedule rather than assuming that their grant will be available on the first day of a new month.

SASSA Payments Are Staggered Over Three Days

Another important part of SASSA’s payment system is the use of a staggered three-day payment cycle.

The main social grants are generally paid in this order:

  1. Older Persons Grants
  2. Disability Grants
  3. Children’s Grants

Instead of millions of beneficiaries having the same scheduled payment date, the main grant categories are allocated different days.

SASSA has said that social grant payments for the 2026/2027 financial year continue to be made early in the month and staggered over three days to improve efficiency and reduce congestion.

October 2026 Is a Good Example

The October 2026 SASSA payment dates show how the system works.

GrantOctober 2026 Payment Date
Older Persons GrantFriday, 2 October 2026
Disability GrantMonday, 5 October 2026
Children’s GrantsTuesday, 6 October 2026

Older Persons Grant beneficiaries are scheduled to receive their grants first on 2 October 2026.

Because the weekend follows, Disability Grants are scheduled for 5 October, followed by Children’s Grants on 6 October 2026.

This demonstrates why beneficiaries should not automatically expect all SASSA payments to start on 1 October.

Why Are Older Persons Paid First?

Under SASSA’s normal staggered payment sequence, Older Persons Grants are paid first, followed by Disability Grants and then Children’s Grants.

The staggered system also helps avoid having beneficiaries from all major grant categories accessing their payments on the same scheduled day.

Older people and persons with disabilities have historically been prioritised in SASSA’s payment scheduling to reduce their exposure to busy payment periods and queues.

Why Payment Dates Change Every Month

SASSA payment dates are not identical every month because the calendar changes.

The first few days of a month may include:

  • Weekends
  • Mondays
  • Public holidays
  • Days immediately following public holidays

SASSA takes these factors into consideration when determining its payment schedule.

As a result, beneficiaries should not assume that because they received their grant on the 2nd of one month, they will automatically receive it on the 2nd the following month.

The official payment schedule for that particular month should always be checked.

Do Beneficiaries Have to Withdraw Their Money on Payment Day?

No. Beneficiaries do not generally have to withdraw their entire grant on the scheduled payment date.

Once the money has been deposited and is available in the beneficiary’s account, it remains there until it is used or withdrawn.

This means beneficiaries do not have to rush to ATMs, retailers or other payment points on the first payment day simply because their money has become available.

Waiting until payment locations are less busy may also help beneficiaries avoid long queues.

What About the SRD R370 Grant?

The SRD R370 grant should not be confused with the three-day payment schedule for permanent social grants.

SRD beneficiaries should not assume that because Older Persons Grants are being paid on a particular date, their R370 payment will arrive on the same day.

SRD applications are processed individually, and beneficiaries should check their own status and payment information through SASSA’s official SRD platform.

An SRD beneficiary may therefore receive their R370 payment on a different date from another approved beneficiary.

What If Your SASSA Grant Is Not Paid on the Expected Date?

If your scheduled payment date arrives but your grant is not available, first check whether there are any notifications or instructions from SASSA.

A payment problem could require the beneficiary to provide additional information or visit a SASSA office.

Some beneficiaries may also be selected for a grant review. If SASSA contacts you about a review, it is important to follow the instructions provided because failure to complete a required review can affect future payments.

Beneficiaries should be particularly careful about fraudulent SMSes or social-media posts claiming that they need to pay someone to release a grant.

SASSA Payment Dates: What Beneficiaries Should Remember

The fact that SASSA does not normally schedule grants for the first day of every month does not mean that payments are late.

The payment date is determined according to SASSA’s official monthly schedule.

For the 2026/2027 financial year, beneficiaries should remember these key points:

  • SASSA aims to pay grants early in the month.
  • Payments are generally not scheduled for the 1st of the month.
  • The main grants are staggered across three payment days.
  • Older Persons Grants are normally paid first.
  • Disability Grants follow.
  • Children’s Grants are paid after the first two categories.
  • Weekends, Mondays and public holidays can affect the dates.
  • SRD R370 beneficiaries should check their individual payment status separately.

Don’t Panic If Your Grant Is Not Paid on the 1st

Seeing no SASSA payment in your account on the first day of a new month does not automatically mean something is wrong.

Beneficiaries should instead check the official SASSA payment date for their particular grant.

For October 2026, for example, the payment cycle begins with Older Persons Grants on 2 October, followed by Disability Grants on 5 October and Children’s Grants on 6 October 2026.

Understanding how the payment schedule works can help beneficiaries plan ahead and avoid unnecessary concern when their grant is not available on the first day of the month.
