Transnet invites suitably qualified South African youth to apply for the Artisan in Training Apprenticeship Programme 2026 / 2027 in various technical trades.

Programme Duration: 24 months

About the Transnet Artisan in Training Programme

The Transnet Artisan in Training Programme is designed to provide participants with practical workplace experience and technical development in trade-related environments.

The programme combines hands-on training, mentorship and industry exposure over a period of 24 months.

Successful candidates will gain practical experience in planning and preparing work sites, using tools and equipment, carrying out installations and assemblies, testing equipment, performing inspections and completing maintenance and repair work.

Available Apprenticeship Opportunities

Transnet is recruiting for the following trades:

  • Boilermaker
  • Electrician
  • Welder
  • Fitter & Turner
  • Millwright
  • Mechanical Fitter

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have completed one of the following:

N2โ€“N6 Qualification

An N2 to N6 Certificate with:

  • Relevant Trade Theory
  • Engineering Science
  • Mathematics
  • Other relevant subjects

NCV Level 4

An NCV Level 4 certificate with:

  • Relevant Trade Theory
  • Mathematics
  • Relevant vocational subjects

Technical Grade 12

Applicants may also qualify with a Technical Grade 12 including:

  • Mathematics
  • Physical Science
  • Relevant Trade Theory

Additional Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Have passed Mathematics with at least 50%.
  • Be between 18 and 30 years old.
  • Be South African citizens.
  • Attach all relevant qualifications.
  • Attach academic records relevant to the position.

Important: Applicants must not already have a Trade Certificate / Red Seal.

What Participants Will Learn

Successful apprentices will gain exposure to activities such as:

  • Preparing work sites.
  • Preparing equipment and tools.
  • Using hand tools.
  • Using power tools.
  • Using measuring equipment.
  • Working with trade-related consumables and materials.
  • Installing and assembling equipment.
  • Fitting and connecting equipment.
  • Testing and inspecting installations.
  • Commissioning equipment.
  • Performing maintenance.
  • Conducting repairs.
  • Following safety and technical procedures.

  • Updated CV.
  • South African ID.
  • Relevant N2โ€“N6, NCV Level 4 or Technical Grade 12 qualification.
  • Academic record.
  • Any additional qualification documents relevant to the apprenticeship.
