The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is inviting applications from qualifying students in Johannesburg communities for its Student Internship Programme 2025. These opportunities fall under the Department of Social Development and are offered for a period not exceeding 18 months.

Closing Date: Tuesday, 02 September 2025
Stipend: R10 109,86 per month (Basic salary, no benefits)
Location: Traduna Building, Johannesburg


Internship Opportunities Available

1. Internship: Food Value Chain

Branch: Food Resilience Unit

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 / NQF Level 4
  • Degree or Diploma in Agriculture Studies / Development Studies (minimum 360 credits)
  • Must be a City of Joburg resident

Primary Function:
Assist in developing and implementing agricultural value chain programmes. This includes food processing, quality and food safety compliance (SABS and HACCP), farmer support, and market linkage initiatives.

Key Learning Areas:

  • Support smallholder agricultural production
  • Identify and establish food value chain opportunities
  • Plan agricultural market days and link farmers to markets
  • Assist in project implementation, monitoring, and evaluation

2. Internship: Youth Coordination

Branch: Targeted Beneficiaries Unit

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 / NQF Level 4
  • BA Degree in Development Studies / Social Sciences (NQF Level 7)
  • Must be a City of Joburg resident

Primary Function:
Support the implementation of youth development programmes to empower young people in Johannesburg. Provide administrative support, coordinate stakeholders, and ensure service delivery.

Key Learning Areas:

  • Coordinate youth development initiatives
  • Administer youth empowerment programmes
  • Liaise with stakeholders to integrate youth services
  • Provide reports, records, and administrative support

Competencies

Both internship streams require:

  • Strong communication (written and verbal)
  • Community development knowledge
  • Project management and coordination skills
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel)
  • Ability to work with stakeholders and communities
