About the Learner Firefighter Learnership Programme
Umzimkhulu Local Municipality is offering a structured 12-month Learnership Programme designed to provide practical training and hands-on experience in firefighting and emergency response services.
Successful learners will:
- Participate in supervised firefighting operations
- Support emergency response activities
- Take part in training drills and assessments
- Assist in community safety and awareness programmes
This programme provides a solid foundation for individuals interested in building a career in public safety, firefighting, and disaster management.
Position Details
Position: Learner Firefighter
Contract Period: 12 Months
Stipend: R6 000.00 per month
Applicants must be residents of Umzimkhulu Local Municipality (proof of residence required).
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Grade 12 (Matric) certificate
- Firefighter One qualification
- Hazmat Awareness certification
- Medically and physically fit for strenuous emergency duties
- No criminal record (background checks will be conducted)
- Valid Code B (or higher) driver’s license (advantageous)
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends, public holidays, and under stressful conditions

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team
- Discipline, integrity, and commitment to public service
- Emotional resilience and ability to work under pressure
Special Conditions
- Appointment subject to medical fitness, physical assessments, psychometric testing, and reference checks
- Successful candidates must sign a learner/firefighter training agreement in line with municipal policies
Key Performance Areas
- Participate in firefighting, rescue, and emergency operations under supervision
- Assist in fire prevention and community awareness programmes
- Perform routine station duties and equipment maintenance
- Attend all prescribed training sessions and drills
- Adhere to occupational health and safety standards
- Support disaster management activities when required
