This trainee role provides an opportunity to gain experience assisting train drivers in the safe and efficient operation of freight trains across the Transnet rail network.
Position Purpose
The Trainee Train Assistant supports the Train Driver in the safe operation and handling of various train and locomotive types, including:
- Airbrake trains
- Vacuum trains
- High-speed trains
- Heavy haul freight trains
- Passenger locomotives
The main objective is to ensure that cargo reaches its destination safely, on time, and in good condition.
Key Responsibilities
The trainee will assist with several operational tasks including:
Train Preparation
- Report for duty and receive work assignments
- Prepare locomotives before departure
- Obtain and check required equipment
- Assist with locomotive brake tests
- Clean and prepare working areas
Communication Equipment
- Collect radios and communication devices
- Check functionality of handsets, walkie-talkies and telemeters
Pre-Trip Train Preparation
- Attach and detach rail vehicles where required
- Complete vehicle lists and train documentation
- Conduct brake tests with the Train Driver
- Inspect the train for safety compliance
Shunting Operations
- Perform shunting activities in sidings
- Move wagons according to work orders
- Update vehicle lists and cargo information
Enroute Assistance
- Observe signals with the Train Driver
- Monitor safe train movement
- Assist during incidents or emergencies
- Protect the train when required
Administration
- Complete train journals after each shift
- Provide feedback on incidents or deviations
- Assist with operational documentation
Minimum Requirements
Educational Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
Additional Requirements
Candidates must:
- Be at least 21 years old
- Be willing to undergo medical examinations and behavioural risk assessments
- Meet physical and mental fitness requirements
- Have good hearing and vision
Physical Requirements
- Minimum height: 1.6 metres
- Ability to carry heavy objects
- Strong psychomotor ability (tested through the Vienna Testing System – VTS)
Training Requirements
Successful candidates must:
- Complete theoretical and practical Train Assistant training
- Obtain a Train Assistant Certificate
- Demonstrate competence to work independently as a Train Assistant
