About the Fellowship

The University of the Free State is offering 2 Postdoctoral Research Fellowships within the Department of Childhood Education, Faculty of Education.

This fellowship focuses on advancing research in Early Childhood Development (ECD) through innovative, interdisciplinary, and community-based approaches.


Fellowship Details

  • Position: Postdoctoral Research Fellow (x2 posts)
  • Contract: 1-year (renewable up to 3 years)
  • Commencement Date: 01 May 2026
  • Location: Bloemfontein (South Campus)

Fellowship Value

  • Annual Stipend: R270 000
  • Research Fund: R30 000 per year

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in Early Childhood Development and Learning
  • Publish at least 3 DHET-accredited journal articles per year
  • Participate in transdisciplinary and community-based ECD projects
  • Initiate and secure funding for research projects
  • Engage in academic activities within the Faculty and Department

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD in a relevant field (obtained within the last 5 years)
  • Strong academic record and research output
  • Ability to conduct full-time research
  • Willingness to relocate to UFS (residential requirement – 80% on campus)
  • Must not hold full-time salaried employment during the fellowship
