About the Dis-Chem Dispensary Support Learnership

The Dis-Chem Dispensary Support Learnership provides an opportunity for candidates interested in pursuing a career within the pharmaceutical and pharmacy environment.

The programme aims to employ learners who are capable of completing the Basic Pharmacist Assistant learner course.

Successful applicants will initially be employed on a fixed-term basis as Dispensary Support employees until they are registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as learner basic pharmacist assistants.

According to the programme information, permanent employment may be offered once a learner successfully qualifies as a Basic Pharmacist Assistant.

What You Will Learn

The learnership provides workplace-based training covering key areas of the pharmaceutical and dispensing environment. Learners will develop practical knowledge and experience while working under appropriate pharmacy supervision.

The programme promotes quality workplace learning and prepares participants for the responsibilities associated with working as a pharmacist assistant.

Responsibilities

Learners’ duties may include:

Assisting with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances.
Assisting with the preparation and compounding of non-sterile medicines according to approved formulas and Standard Operating Procedures.
Unpacking and merchandising dispensary stock.
Cleaning dispensary and over-the-counter shelves.
Learning how to interpret prescriptions accurately.
Picking, packing and labelling medication accurately.
Ensuring medication is checked and signed off by a pharmacist.
Assisting with stock control for Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines.
Monitoring medicine expiry dates and shelf organisation.
Following up with patients regarding prescription tracking and appointments.
Assisting with patient service telephone calls.
Providing health-related information to customers.
Assisting with medical scheme authorisations for chronic, HIV/AIDS and oncology medication.
Reporting low or out-of-stock items and stock discrepancies.
Receiving dispensary stock in accordance with company procedures.
Performing other duties assigned by the Dispensary Manager.

Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

Have Grade 12.
Have completed Pure Mathematics.
Have completed either Physical Science or Life Science.
Have achieved an average of at least 50%.

Skills and Competencies

Candidates should be able to read, write and speak English as well as a second language.

Applicants should also demonstrate good time management, attention to detail, communication, customer service, problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Computer literacy and numerical skills are also important, together with the ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, demonstrate accountability and maintain professional and ethical conduct.
