Prospective students planning to study at a South African university in 2027 should take note: 30 September 2026 is one of the biggest university application deadlines of the year.
Several universities are scheduled to close applications for undergraduate programmes on or by Wednesday, 30 September 2026.
With the deadline approaching, Grade 12 learners, students taking a gap year and applicants who have already completed matric should avoid waiting until the last day.
Here are some of the major South African universities with 2027 applications closing on 30 September 2026.
1. University of the Witwatersrand (Wits)
Closing date: 30 September 2026
The University of the Witwatersrand is closing applications for its remaining undergraduate programmes on 30 September 2026.
Wits has different deadlines depending on the programme. Applications for programmes in the Faculty of Health Sciences, Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Bachelor of Audiology, Bachelor of Speech-Language Pathology and BA Film and Television closed earlier, on 30 June 2026.
All remaining undergraduate programmes close on 30 September 2026.
Residence applications also close on the same date.
Applicants interested in programmes that are still accepting applications should therefore submit before the deadline.

The University of Limpopo is another institution prospective students should have on their September deadline list.

There are important exceptions. Applications for MBChB (Medicine) and applications from international students closed on 30 July 2026.
The university also lists 30 September 2026 as the closing date for Master’s in Clinical Psychology applications.
A non-refundable application fee of R200 applies.

5. University of the Free State (UFS)

The University of the Free State opened applications for the 2027 academic year on 1 April 2026.

6. University of Venda (Univen)

7. University of Pretoria (UP) โ Selected Programmes
Closing date: 30 September 2026 for various programmes and South African postgraduate applicants
The University of Pretoria has programme-specific closing dates, which means applicants should not assume that every UP programme closes on 30 September.
However, a number of 2027 programmes list 30 September 2026 as the deadline for South African applicants, particularly postgraduate programmes.
For example, UP’s Department of Human Resource Management lists 30 September 2026 as the closing date for South African applicants to its Honours and Master’s programmes, while international applicants have an earlier deadline.
Applicants should therefore use UP’s official programme information to check the deadline for the exact qualification they want to study.

Important: Not Every University Closes on 30 September
Students should not assume that all 26 public universities in South Africa close applications on 30 September.
Universities set their own application periods, and deadlines can also differ between programmes.
For example, the University of Cape Town (UCT) closed undergraduate applications for 2027 on 31 July 2026. UCT says undergraduate applications received after that deadline will not be considered.
Meanwhile, Unisa has a later application period. Applications for undergraduate qualifications for 2027 are open from 17 August to 9 October 2026.
This is why applicants should always check the deadline for the specific university and qualification they want to apply for.

What Documents Should You Prepare?
Requirements differ between universities, but applicants should generally have their documents ready before starting an online application.
These may include:
- South African ID or passport
- Grade 11 final results for current Grade 12 learners
- Latest Grade 12 results
- National Senior Certificate if you have already completed matric
- Academic transcript if you have previously studied at another institution
- Proof of payment where an application fee is required
- Additional programme-specific documents, where applicable
International applicants may need additional documents, including proof of qualifications and other documents required by the university.
Always follow the document requirements published by the institution to which you are applying.
Don’t Wait Until 30 September to Apply
Although applications may officially remain open until 30 September 2026, waiting until the final few hours can create unnecessary problems.
Applicants may experience internet connectivity problems, difficulty uploading documents or delays when trying to obtain outstanding information.
Submitting early also gives you time to check your application status and respond if the university requests additional documents.
What Happens After You Apply?
Submitting an application does not automatically mean you have been accepted.
Universities will assess applicants according to admission requirements, academic performance, programme-specific selection criteria and available space.
Some applicants may receive conditional or provisional offers while completing Grade 12, with final admission depending on their final National Senior Certificate results.
Applicants should regularly check their email and university application portals for updates.
Will Universities Accept Late Applications After 30 September?
This depends on the institution.
Some universities may open late applications or late-enquiry systems for selected programmes if space remains, but students should never assume that late applications will be available.
CUT, for example, explicitly states that there are no late or walk-in applications for its application cycle.
The safest approach is to submit your application before the official deadline.
Final Reminder: Apply Before 30 September 2026
If you want to study at a South African university in 2027, September is an important month.
Major institutions with application deadlines on 30 September 2026 include Wits University, University of Limpopo, University of the Western Cape, Central University of Technology, University of the Free State and University of Venda, while selected University of Pretoria programmes also use the date.
Do not wait until the final day.
Check your programme requirements, prepare your documents and submit your application as soon as possible.
Remember that application deadlines can differ by programme, particularly for Medicine, Health Sciences, Architecture, Dentistry and other selection programmes. Always confirm your exact qualification’s closing date on the university’s official website before applying.
Application information checked on 18 September 2026. Universities may update application dates or close individual programmes when capacity is reached.
