About the Hytec SA Fitter Apprenticeship
Hytec SA has two apprenticeship opportunities for mechanically qualified apprentices who need to complete the practical training required to qualify as Fitters.
Applicants must have already completed the theoretical component of their course as a minimum requirement.
The programme will provide practical workplace training in areas including hydraulic system assembly, installation, maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting and related workshop activities.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Post-Matric/N3 qualification.
- Completed institutional training through a registered and accredited training institution.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
- Code 8 driver’s licence.
- Be medically fit.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Willingness to work overtime when required.
- Ability and willingness to work under pressure.
Hydraulic skills will be an advantage.
Familiarity with tools and equipment used in electrical assembly will also be advantageous.
Key Areas of Training
Successful apprentices will receive practical training across several areas required for their development as Fitters.
Assembly and Installation: Apprentices will learn to assemble hydraulic systems according to engineering drawings and specifications and install systems in accordance with applicable instructions and procedures.
Repair and Maintenance: Training will include diagnosing hydraulic system problems, performing repairs and conducting preventative maintenance to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
Component Replacement: Apprentices will gain experience replacing worn or damaged components such as pumps, valves, hoses and fittings.
Assembly and Wiring: Training will include assembling electrical control panels, mounting components such as circuit breakers, relays and terminal blocks, and wiring electrical components according to schematic diagrams.
Troubleshooting: Apprentices will learn to identify malfunctions and failures in hydraulic systems, determine their root causes and implement appropriate solutions.
Safety Compliance
Successful candidates will be required to follow safety regulations and applicable industry standards when working with hydraulic systems.
All assigned tasks must be completed safely to minimise the risk of workplace accidents and injuries.
Documentation and Quality Control
Apprentices will also be expected to:
- Maintain accurate records of installations.
- Record repairs and maintenance activities.
- Maintain component inventory records.
- Complete Quality Control Procedures (QCP).
- Complete other required technical documentation.
Customer and Technical Support
The apprentices will interact with project technicians and production managers to understand hydraulic system requirements.
They may also provide technical assistance and support and help address questions or concerns relating to the systems being worked on.
