About City of Johannesburg Chartered Accountant Training Programme 2026
The City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality is inviting applications for The Cityโs Academy for Chartered Accountant Training Programme 2026 under the Group Governance Department.
The programme is aimed at developing and increasing financial management skills within the public sector by creating professional training opportunities for prospective Chartered Accountants.
The programme provides trainee accountants with hands-on work experience, dedicated training in financial management and broad exposure to local government business operations and management functions.

Structure of the ACA Training Programme
The three-year professional training programme is structured to expose trainee accountants to key areas including:
- Professional values and attitudes
- Business acumen
- Accounting
- Financial reporting
- Governance
- Business and financial strategy
- Internal audit
- Risk management
The City of Johannesburg Chartered Accountant Training Programme is guided by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) training regulations.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12, NQF Level 4
- Completed Certificate in Theory of Accounting (CTA) or Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA), endorsed by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA)
- Qualification must be a prerequisite for admission to the SAICA Initial Assessment of Competence (IAC)
- 0 to 1 year working experience
Candidates currently registered under a SAICA training contract with an accredited training office must have successfully passed the SAICA Initial Assessment of Competence (IAC) and must still be within the first year of their training contract.
Preference will be given to Johannesburg residents.
Who Is Not Eligible to Apply?
Applicants are not eligible to apply if they are currently completing:
- CTA
- CTA Level 1
- BCTA, Bridging Course into CTA
Primary Function
The trainee accountants will be developed to use integrated thinking to interpret, analyse and evaluate financial and non-financial information.
This will help trainee accountants support impactful decision-making and contribute meaningfully to the City, the economy and society.
During the training period, trainee accountants will be developed to become ethical leaders who create sustainable value for stakeholders within the City. They will be rotated across different departments and municipal entities to gain a wide range of skills and competencies required by SAICA.
