City of Johannesburg Student Internship 2026

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) has officially published Student Internship Circular 006/2026, inviting qualifying students from Johannesburg communities to apply for an internship opportunity within the Human Settlements Department.

Closing Date: Monday, 02 March 2026
Duration: Not exceeding 18 months
Location: 222 Smit Street, Braamfontein

This programme forms part of the City’s commitment to providing work-based training and experiential learning for students who require practical exposure to complete or complement their academic qualifications.


Internship Position

Designation: Internship – Policy, Planning & Research

Remuneration:

R10 109,86 per month (Basic Salary, no benefits)
Applicable to candidates who have completed a qualification with a minimum of 360 credits.


Who Can Apply?

This opportunity is open to:

  • Youth residing in Johannesburg communities
  • Students who have never participated in an internship programme before
    (Except where a previous internship was not relevant to the field of study)
  • City of Johannesburg residents only

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)
  • NQF Level 7 qualification in one of the following fields:
    • Housing
    • Human Settlements
    • Public Administration
    • Public Policy
    • Development Studies
    • Law
    • Related Social Sciences disciplines

Primary Function of the Role

The intern will:

  • Contribute to research activities within the Directorate
  • Assist in policy development and baseline research
  • Coordinate stakeholder engagements and public participation processes
  • Provide administrative support within the Directorate

Key Learning Areas

Interns will gain experience in:

  • Producing quality research reports
  • Policy development processes
  • Stakeholder coordination and public forums
  • Administrative support and project coordination
