Purpose of the Role

The Fire Fighter in Training role focuses on protecting company assets and personnel from safety, health, environment, risk and quality (SHERQ) related emergency incidents.

Successful candidates will receive training and practical experience in:

  • Emergency response
  • Fire prevention and firefighting
  • Safety equipment maintenance
  • Industrial emergency management

Appointments may be made from Fire Fighter in Training up to Leading Fire Fighter, depending on experience and qualifications.


Key Responsibilities

Firefighters in training will be responsible for:

  • Applying SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) best practices during emergency management activities
  • Responding to emergency incidents in plants and facilities
  • Participating in physical and technical training programmes
  • Maintaining firefighting and life-support equipment
  • Servicing portable firefighting equipment in buildings and plants
  • Supporting safety improvement initiatives
  • Participating in performance management discussions and development plans
  • Working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics or equivalent qualification
  • Must be medically fit according to firefighter fitness standards
  • 0–5 years relevant experience

Advantageous Qualifications

The following certifications will be beneficial but are not mandatory:

  • Fire Fighter 1 & 2 (NFPA 1001)
  • Hazmat Awareness and Operations (NFPA 1072/472)
  • HPCSA Registered Basic Ambulance Assistant (BAA / BLS)
  • First Aid Level 3
  • Intermediate Life Support (ILS)

Placement level will depend on experience, training and Sasol emergency management career path requirements.
