registration with the Health Profession Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
as a dispensing optician.
Career Information
Working as a dispensing optician is a varied and multi-faceted
career, which offers a balance between working with people and using
modern scientific technology to the benefit of the patient.
A dispensing optician analyses a written prescription from an optometrist or ophthalmologist, taking into consideration the lifestyle and working environment of the patient. By taking accurate facial measurements, using specialised equipment, applying knowledge of ophthalmic lens materials and interpreting the prescription, the dispensing optician can order, manufacture and process ophthalmic lenses and produce devices to correct defects of vision.
As a member of the eye care team, the dispensing optician is also equipped to conduct vision screenings for referral, as well as adjustments, and repairs to spectacles and contact lens modifications. The good dispensing optician develops and maintains an enduring relationship with the patient, which makes the career a rewarding and fulfilling one.
A dispensing optician registers with the HPCSA as an Independent Practitioner, and is therefore able to set up his or her own Opticianry practice. The National Diploma in Optical Dispensing is an internationally recognised qualification.
Career Opportunities A dispensing optician registers with the HPCSA as an Independent Practitioner and may set up their own opticianry practice. They have a variety of opportunities for employment in private optometric practices and also the public health sector. Career opportunities also exist in the retail and wholesale industries, ranging from technical to sales and marketing. The registered dispensing optician has a number of exciting opportunities available to them including employment with:

• Optical industry representatives
• Private optometry/ opticianry practice
• Public sector hospitals
• Private ophthalmology practice
• Dedicated private sector eye clinics
