UNFPA invites South African graduates to apply for the Programme Coordination Unit Internship Programme 2026.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is offering a 6-month internship opportunity within the Programme Coordination Unit (PCU) at the East and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) in Johannesburg.
The internship provides graduates with an opportunity to gain practical experience in programme coordination, monitoring, development planning, and regional programme implementation within the United Nations system.
Internship Overview
Under the supervision of the Regional Programme Coordination Advisor, the intern will support the Programme Coordination Unit in implementing the Regional Programme Action Plan (RPAP) aligned with the UNFPA Strategic Plan 2026–2029.
The intern will collaborate with operations and technical units to support programme coordination across East and Southern Africa.
The internship offers valuable exposure to development programming, financial monitoring, programme design, and policy implementation within the UN system.
Key Responsibilities
Programme Development and Implementation
- Support capacity-building initiatives for Country Offices in the East and Southern Africa region.
- Assist in reviewing key programme documents such as:
- UN Common Country Analysis (CCA)
- United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF)
- Country Programme Documents (CPDs)
- Monitor country programming roadmaps to ensure progress.
- Support activities of the ESA Regional Programme Review Committee (PRC).
Programme Monitoring and Oversight
- Assist with monitoring and reporting on regional programme implementation.
- Support work plan preparation, budget monitoring, and programme analysis.
- Assist with implementing partner management and assurance activities.
- Monitor programme and financial performance using key indicators.
Knowledge Management
- Support updating the Programme Coordination Unit programme folder with relevant information and documentation.
- Prepare knowledge products highlighting:
- Emerging issues
- Best practices
- Lessons learned
- Participate in meetings reviewing evaluation feedback from regional technical assistance initiatives.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Education
- Must be enrolled in or recently graduated from a postgraduate degree programme (Master’s level or higher) in fields such as:
- International Development
- Public Health
- Women or Gender Studies
- Population and Development
- Related disciplines
Applicants who have graduated must start the internship within one year of graduation.
Language Requirements
- Fluency in English
- Knowledge of other languages is an advantage.
Additional Requirements
- Demonstrated interest in international development
- Ability to work effectively in multicultural environments
- Strong analytical and writing skills
- Experience with development agencies or volunteer work is advantageous.

Financial Support
Interns may receive a monthly stipend to assist with basic expenses if they are not financially supported by another institution.
Applicants must have valid medical insurance for the duration of the internship, as UNFPA does not provide medical insurance for interns.
