Western Cape Bursary 2016 Essay Competition

Nedbank, Provincial Treasury & the Western Cape Education Department present a Bursary Competition for Grade 11 students who plan to pursue careers in maths, economics & accounting.

What can I win?

Winners of the Competition are awarded a cash amount and the opportunity to access a study bursary to pursue a three year degree/diploma in the fields of economics, finance, mathematics, accountancy and/or commerce, at one of the Universities in the Western Cape.

What do I need to do?

Essay Task Scenario:

The South African Government and Private sector is caught up between

  1. the need for extraction and second stage processing of energy resources for providing the necessary stimulus for growth, development and wealth creation for the country and its citizens, and
  1. simultaneously moving to a sustainable energy resource position where they do not deplete the country’s natural energy resources at a rate such as “there is only one earth and we are acting as if there were two.”

In your essay you are required to:

Critically analyse the above-mentioned statement with reference to the current South African situation regarding the creative utilisation and/or extraction and processing of natural energy resources in South Africa by the Government and private sector, bearing in mind the sustainability and protection of the environment.

Make recommendations to the South African Government and private sector to develop and secure South Africa’s energy resources as a growing economy in a global environment, ensuring environmental care and sustainability.

  • be well researched
  • consist of a minimum of 2200 words
  • conform to the required layout.
