Millions of South Africans depend on the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant each month to survive. With the current R370 monthly payment being a lifeline for many, facing a rejection can be distressing. Fortunately, SASSA has an appeals process in place — and for June 2025, the SRD appeal window is officially open.
Why Was Your SRD Grant Declined?
Due to the overwhelming number of applications, not all are approved. Common reasons for rejection include:
- Income detected in your bank account
- Receiving support from NSFAS or UIF
- Incorrect or incomplete information
If you believe your application was unfairly rejected, you have the right to appeal.
How to Appeal Your SRD Grant Rejection (June 2025)
The appeal process is handled by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) — an impartial body that ensures your appeal is reviewed fairly.
Here’s how to lodge your SRD appeal:
- Visit the ITSAA Website: https://srd.dsd.gov.za
- Enter Your South African ID Number.
- Provide the Cellphone Number you used when applying.
- Click “Send Pin” and wait for a verification code via SMS.
- Enter the Pin and Click “Submit.”
- Select the Month you are appealing (e.g., June 2025).
- Choose a Reason for Your Appeal from the provided list.
- Click “Submit” to complete the process.
If your appeal is approved, you’ll receive an SMS from SASSA confirming your updated status. If it’s rejected, you can escalate the matter further through the High Court via a judicial review — although that step is optional and more complex.
Who Qualifies for the R370 SRD Grant?
To receive the SRD grant, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, asylum seeker, or special permit holder.
- Be unemployed and not receiving any income or government financial support.
- Not receive UIF, NSFAS, or other social grants.
